Lesson Learnt

Lessons can sometimes be pretty hard ...

Skin Punch Biopsy

Did a skin punch biopsy(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skin_biopsy)at NUH today cos have been having weird reddish patches that itches like mad on my thighs and legs for the past months. I have been to at least 5 GPs who prescribed me all sorts of cream and pills but nothing helps.

Initially I thought was due to the bites from Chongqing in June but having consulted the specialist (Dr Jeanne from NUH derma clinic), a skin punch biopsy was needed to determine the cause.

I totally freaked out on friday during my med appt when Dr Jeanne told me that I need to do a minor op for the SPB and was trying to wriggle my way out but to no avail so I had to drag myself to the hospital today.

Lying on the hospital bed, I can't help but feel my heart racing at turbo speed.. i am soooo fearful of pain and needles. What's worse, it was mentioned that there will be stitches involved (I was imagining myself with a looooong row of stitches across my thighs like train tracks). Needless to say, my blood pressure shot sky high and the nurse was trying to coax me to relax. yup, I am a HUGE SCARDY CAT!

When the LA was administered, it was PAINFUL (okie, in princess Wenz's context..heheheh)and what happened next was in a flurry... a cloth was placed on my thighs, swap of alcohol, lotsa snipping sounds, pressure applied, metal clanking, snip , snap and okie it is DONE!Woah, tt's FAST even before my head can start spinning from trying to imagine the procedure!

So it wasn't THAT bad after all ...= P

But now that I have removed the gauze, the wound still looks kinda raw and the stitches fresh. Oh and I have bluish black bruise the size of a 50cents coin..eekk ...

Holiday Distraction

Yup, a word which Su Lian coined to describe what I have gone through for the past month or so. Yes, I was distracted ...went through a roller coaster cartful of emotions and have emerged stronger ? I hope but I dun think so ...just a little more confused and a lot more unsettled.

Life is weird, throwing all sorts of curve balls in our way ..sometimes we dodge successfully, at times we get smacked in our face with it .

Happy Teachers' Day !

Knowing that Teachers' Day is round the corner, I wanted to get Jun involved in making little cards for his N2 teachers so I whipped out some paper and bought some really nice puffy stickers and wala, here's our final creation ! Cute right ???

Jun had the utmost important job of choosing the appropriate stickers and doing the decoration and his choices are pretty good ! Though I admit, I had to convince him on the placement cos kids just like to stick all over the card without a concept ... ok ok, I know I shdn't stifle his creativity. I will LEARN... = (

Anyway, I love the cards so much that I HAD to keep some memories of them .Hahaha

Oh, and the furry pens are soooo princessy and best of all they dun cost a bomb so I bought extras for Ah Rong & Su Lian too ! Of cos the little prince took a blue pen too ... how can he be left out by his 二十四孝姐姐 right? Did I mention that I have an entire set of these furry mink pens in my office too ? Who says one can't be cute at work huh ? = P

Okie okie, but to the topic ...anyway, we had lotsa fun & most of all, I wanted to expose Jun to little handicraft and hands on actitvities away from FB (yes, I started him on it ...sorry..yesterday he was glued to ipad but that's not my fault honestly!) and Disney Channel (err, I subscribed that too...oops).

Happy Teachers' Day !!

My Reptilian Friends ..Ssssplendid !

Here are 2 of my senior docents (Shirley & Marcus) on duty sharing knowledge and spreading conservation messages .. good job folks!

Some of the specimens that we can talk abt.. there are like so many of them & I am still trying to remember the facts ...hehehe

Elvis, the King Cobra after his meal of python..check out his bulging tummy ...
A blood python yawning while safely camoflaged among the dried leaves

2 retriculated pythons intertwinned and resting in the water. Retriculated python is the world's longest snake, measuring up to 10m long!

Indian Star Tortoises are cute but they do not live well in captivity and belong to the wild. Many babies die while being smuggled in atrocious conditions so please spread the message and do not support exotic pet trade .. = )

Chanced upon the keeper bring out this beautiful royal python out for a walk and requested for a pic with it ...nice & muscular ..=)

Bob, the green Iguana, also known as the common Iguana. He has been taxidermised and was confiscated at the Singapore Customs. Such animals belong to the wild so do not support the killing of them by participating in sale of them or their parts .. be it dead or alive

Sorry, can't remember what species is this but isn't it a beauty ?
Our first baby komodo dragon born in the Singapore Zoo in 34 years after the parents Bima & Yoko went on a 1.5 yr courtship... He is a very active komodo and is often seen climbing and walking in the enclosure.

Batam Trip_17 Jul 2010

Last Saturday, a group of us went to Batam on a 1 day trip and it wasn't too bad though it did not start off too well cos SOMEBODY was LATE hence the entire group MISSED the intended ferry at 8.20am .

Okie, I admit, the SOMEBODY was MOI !! I AM THE GUILTY ONE!!

No excuses given, I had bad time management skills and ended up at the ferry terminal a tad too late for check in (despite me sprinting all the way from harbour front NEL to the check in counter ..bet the building was trembling with my every step ...hehehe)

Thankfully, I have a group of wonderful and understanding friends who gamely went back to the ticketing counter to request for the next available ferry and unfortunately, the 9am ferry was fully booked so we had to wait another 2 hrs for the 10.30am ferry ... = (

Despite the initial hiccups, we managed to reach Batam just in time for the seafood lunch and we continued with the day trip to a cultural show (din really like the portion where the man demonstrated his glass eating capabilities), polo tee outlets, massage and finally a short walk about at some shopping centre.

Posing in the coach ... what else is new ??Hehehe

Buah Salat Chips or Gong Gong Keropok anyone ?

Finally a group pic with our happy purchases of tees, keropok, Kueh Lapis,
Kueh Ambon and Indo Mee ! Sedap !!

Shape Run 2010_25 July 10

Jumped out of bed at 5.30am and thought, YIPPEE , TODAY IS THE DAY !

Yup, this is my Virgin Run and boy am I excited ! Honestly, I have not been training for this run but I thought, what the heck, if I do not try, I will NEVER know if my body can meet up to this challenge

For those who know me would know that I have managed to shed almost 10kg from participating in last year's LOSE TO WIN CHALLENGE by HPB and have since then, resumed my exercise regime (yup, I used to be quite a gym rat 6 yrs back when I was still in NLB @ Millenia). This run was a challenge I posed to myself ever since I discovered the joy of jogging last year. To me, this is amazing cos I have NEVER passed my 2.4km in school and HATED jogging all my life. The LTW Challenge has changed my perception so here I am, all prepared to embark on more runs ... But not before I survive the 5km Shape Run today !Hehehe

So it was with great excitement that I met Sandy and Minz at the starting point and boy was it crowded! I heard there were like 10, 000 women for this event..what great news! Amongst us, I could see women of all shapes and sizes all geared up for the run. I knew that I had to start small so opted for the 5km run instead. Janey who is an avid runner went for 10km (kudos !). I was really glad that San made it for the run despite (1) recovering from flu (2)doesn't exceptionally like running (3)it was a run at 7.30am on a Sunday morning ...hehehe ..hugz

My personal target was simple.. Do Not Stop and aim for the finishing line and with this, I paced myself throughout the route and ran at a constant speed. With my trusty MP3 blasting (and I mean it was REAL loud) away my favourite, fast beat songs, I was enjoying myself throughout the run and even broke into a little shoulder shimmy & finger snapping repertoire..hahaha

With the finishing line just ahead, I kept telling myself to push a little harder and all I could think of was "You Can DO It, WENDY, YOU CAN !" I must say that it was exhilarating to cross the finishing line and I was grinning from ear to ear like a Cheshire Cat at the accomplishment

For many, completing 5km under 46min may seem insignificant and a terrible result but to me, I was proud of the fact that I did not stop despite fatigue and best of all, I accomplish what I set out to do. =

So here's some shots of me and Sandy being crazy after the run ...hehehe

So what's a great run without reward right ? MAKAN TIME !! Yiiippppeeee !

Docent Training @ Bird Park_4 Jul 10

First stop was the lory loft and it was loads of fun with the free flying lories all over the enclosure.

Here's the station that is selling the feed that is made up of nectar and honey .. look how anxious the lories are? just waiting for their chance to steal a sip of the mixture ..hehehe

Was feeling all ticklish with the mischievous lory on my back ..quick take the pic!!

Here comes the mysterious hand of "TP" again with the feed

Now's my turn for a drink !

Love the vibrant background...

See ...who says polka dots cant go with stripes ?? Such a high fashion look !

Love the signboards ...looks like a totem right ?

Ohhh ... finally we had lunch! It was time for yummy BBQ chicken at Bongo Burgers and what's best, we had 30% staff discount as Docents .. = )

Heard the chicken wings are sedapalious too ...maybe will try it next week at Night Safari during training ..so greedy ..hahaha

What a riot of colours ! Mother Nature is truly an artist for she creates the most outstanding masterpiece..

And the parting shot ... any questions ? * arrhh *

Do we really need Sharks Fin Soup ?

Do you really need to go to that extent for a bowl of sharks fin soup even if you really do like the taste ? Do you know that these innocent creatures die a slow death after their fins are harvested and their living bodies are thrown back to the sea where they starve to death, are eaten alive or even drown.

Please think before you reach out to order a bowl of this supposedly asian delicacy ...do you REALLY want to continue to be a part of this or teach your children that this is what you do for a bowl of soup?

You can make that choice ...when the buying stops, the brutality will too ..
